Zakir Habib & KEF undertake relief efforts

Zakir Habib of the 16th Entry has been extensively involved in the flood relief efforts ever since the great disaster struck in August 2010. He along with Kashmir Education Foundation (KEF) of which he is one of the Trustees have collected donations, both in terms of money and in kind, for distribution in the affected areas.

Initially the group managed to distribute ready to eat food, clothes and rations along with 40 tons of water supplied by Pharmagen. About 30 tons was air lifted to Jacobabad, D.G Khan, Jampur Muzafargarh & Rajanpur. 10 tons was distributed in KPK (Nowshehra).

Currently we have taken up 80 houses in Nowshera. We have collected the data of these families. They have going back to there homes and started trying to repair there houses, clean the mess and salvage whatever was left. The group has given the affectees mineral water, ration, clothes and shoes. It is now in the process of distributing bedding, clothing, ration and other household essentials of daily use.

FUTURE PLANS

Depending on the resources the group plans to take up two to three villages (about 1000 households) and provide them with tents and cooked food for 20 to 30 days, two meals a day and place to sleep so they should start to rebuild their houses. As winter is approaching and the people need to repair their katcha houses and move in, even if that means that they manage to livve in a single room.

Zakir was extensively involved in relief efforts during the 2005 earthquake. He and his group built special shelters in areas like Kotli and Muzaffarabad with KEF's support.
